LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The 2020 Law Enforcement Torch Run to support the New Mexico Special Olympics was held in Las Cruces over the weekend.
The event was modified due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, but participants symbolically passed the Special Olympics torch during the annual run.
The event commenced Friday morning near the intersection of Northrise Drive and Sonoma Ranch Boulevard. Runners continued south on Sonoma Ranch Boulevard and finished their run at the East Mesa Public Safety Complex. The run culminated with the passing of the Special Olympics torch to a waiting uniformed officer.
“Border Patrol agents are embedded in the fiber of the communities where they live and work,” stated El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez. “Off-duty agents who participated are honored to take part in yearly events such as the New Mexico Special Olympics, which are near and dear to their heart.”
Border Patrol agents accompanied law enforcement officers from across southern New Mexico participated in the nearly 3.2 mile long run.
Participants included the Las Cruces Police Department, New Mexico State Police, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, Probation Office and U. S. Border Patrol agents.
