One Confirmed Dead, Two Trapped After Baltimore Gas Explosion

A gas explosion ripped through a residential Baltimore area Monday, killing one woman and trapping at least two other individuals in the rubble, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The explosion took place before 10 a.m. in the Reistertown Station neighborhood on Labyrinth St., the cause of which is still unclear and being investigated by authorities, said Blair Adams, the public relations officer of the Baltimore Fire Department, according to the Sun.

The explosion crumbled three houses in the residential district, the Baltimore Fire Department said in a tweet. The fire department, police department and other agencies responded to the situation, according to Adams.

The Baltimore firefighter’s union provided an update on Twitter that three critically injured patients had been rescued by firefighters and Special Rescue Operation units had arrived to survey the remainder of the situation for other possible trapped individuals.

The Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) is working closely with the Baltimore Fire Department to respond to the situation, the utility company said in a statement.

“Crews are working to turn off gas to the buildings in the immediate area. Once the gas is off we can begin to safely assess the situation including inspections of BGE equipment,” according to a statement from BGE.

Over 200 rescue personnel also responded to the scene, including Mayor Bernard Young, City Council President Brandon Scott and police commissioner Michael Harrison, the Sun reported.
