Delta, already a major hurricane, is forecast to hit somewhere along the Northern Coast of the Gulf of Mexico sometime early Saturday morning and the forecast cone is centered on Lousiana.
Hurricane Delta has maximum sustained winds of 115 mph making it a category 3 major hurricane. The storm is currently 120 miles southwest of Grand Cayman moving west-northwest at about 16 mph but is expected to turn north-northwest some time Thursday.
Delta strengthened significantly Monday with an estimated 63 mph gain from 8pm EDT Sunday to 8pm EDT Monday.
The hurricane is expected to strengthen to category 4 with 140 mph winds on Tuesday, then weaken a bit before making landfall as a strong category 3 or possibly a category 4 with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph or more.
The national hurricane center warns that there is an increasing likelihood of life-threatening storm surge along the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast.
