Trump Campaign Files Suit in Arizona Over Mishandled Ballots

The Trump campaign and Republican National Committee filed a lawsuit late Saturday claiming that poll workers in the state had forced voters to invalidate their ballots, according to a Trump campaign statement.

The suit alleges that Maricopa County incorrectly rejected ballots cast by in-person voters on Election Day due to an overvote situation and asserts that poll workers directed voters to purposefully invalidate their ballots.

An overvote is when a voter selects too many candidates for a given position. For instance, a school board may have 5 open positions and 10 candidates. The ballot instructs the voter to “Pick Only 5”. In a case where the voter picks 6 or more for that section of the ballot, the scanner would signal an overvote error. The proper action is for the election official to get a new ballot for the voter, inform them of the error and let them correct it. In Maricopa County, Arizona, it appears that didn’t happen.

According to the campaign statement, poll workers “struggled” with voting machines and instructed voters to “improperly press a green button to override errors” when they occurred. “The results is that the voting machines disregarded votes on Election Day in Maricopa County.”

The campaign has collected affidavits from voters who witnessed the situation and in the suit, they demand that election officials examine all overvoted ballots.
