HOW TO TURN A SPARE ROOM INTO A HOME-OFFICE

Lockdown and social distancing have forced many businesses to go online. Due to technological advances, working remotely has become the new norm. Whether you are a freelancer or want to set up a business of your own, you need a home office space to work in a professional setup. You will experience an increased rate of productivity when you have an office space dedicated to the work environment. Continue reading this article to learn about the steps you need to take in order to turn your spare room into an office.

Set up a Plan: Every room serves a particular goal, according to which you design the layout. You need to decide what type of office this room will be: will you have many clients coming and going to the office? Or will it be just you, working alone on a computer? Different types of work will entail different office structures.

  • Once you are satisfied with the office design, look for experienced and licensed remodeling contractors to carry on the construction works, if needed. Be very clear about your requirements as construction works can be expensive, and you cannot just break a structure every time you feel like it.
  • Now, it is time to get a new coat of painting on the walls. Choose a calm and muted tone for the walls. You may color the ceilings white to let the light flow all through the room. Utilize lighting carefully to give the room a spacious and airy atmosphere.

Purchase Furniture: When you have the right desk, the writing will just come to you; or so is believed by many authors. Whether you write fiction, non-fiction, or business analytics, you need a sturdy and modern desk, to begin with. You can go to a local furniture shop and browse through the kind of pieces you want for your office. If, however, you feel at a loss and don’t know what to shop for, you can always hire an interior designer who will handpick the best items for your office set up to create a more professional look.

Office Supplies: Unless you want to refrain from using technology in your office, you might need a computer with an internet connection. You will also need a fax machine, a printer and a phone and more. While purchasing these technical items, you cannot just pick the first thing you see in the shop. Talk to someone who knows the ins & outs of the high ends modern gadgets to get the latest products from the market. Also, purchase other office supplies such as white papers, staplers, post-it pads, pens, and more.

Set Boundaries: When you are in a home office, it is easier for you to want to take a break. But you must remind yourself that you have invested money in creating this office space to focus on work. If you have kids in your home, make sure you talk to them properly in order to let them understand that they can’t barge into the office whenever they want. It is a place of business and should be treated as such.

When you finally get a hang of working in your new office, you’ll find it is a blessing to be able to work from the comfort of your own home. You don’t have to deal with the heavy traffic daily and are free from the unnecessary chit-chats of co-workers. Work from home allows you to solely focus on the work, improving the quality of the same.
