House Republicans have selected Rep. Elise Stefanik to replace Rep. Liz Cheney as House Republican Chair. Cheney was ousted earlier this week after her support of the Trump impeachment and actions that many considered controversial.
As the conversation began around removing Cheney, Stefanik positioned herself as the most likely replacement. She was organizing an effort to secure the role and had the support of many Republicans in the House. Some conservative commentators have questioned Stefanik’s voting record, but Stefanik was a staunch Trump ally throughout the impeachment trial and his term in office.
Former President Donald Trump quickly congratulated Stefanik on her new post in a message sent out by his Save America PAC.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Tx) had attempted to challenge Stefanik to the new role. For many Republicans, Roy was not seen as a viable alternative to Cheney and a more divisive personality.
Now the question becomes will Republicans continue to remain behind the Trump movement, or will they begin to cave to Democratic pressure? This latest move seems to indicate that they are beginning to recognize the influence that Trump still has in the country on their party and will continue to follow his lead.
