Colin Powell, former Secretary of State, dead at 84

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has died. He was 84 years old and was suffering from complications of COVID-19. His family made the announcement.

Powell was the first African American to hold the title of Secretary of State. According to The Hill, the family said the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had been fully vaccinated and was receiving treatment at Walter Reed National Medical Center.

Powell entered the US Army after graduating in 1958 and served two tours in Vietnam. He rose to popularity after the Gulf war. He served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs under the first President Bush. Then, he became the highest-ranking African American, to that point, while serving as Secretary of State.

He became controversial among conservatives in recent years with his comments about President Trump and his endorsement of Joe Biden for President.
