Escaped Zebras Caught Outside DC After 4 Months On The Run

The last two fugitive zebras that escaped from a Maryland farm in August have been found and returned to their heard after a lengthy search.

Three zebras escaped from the Maryland farm, where about 40 zebras were living, and they roamed the Washington, D.C., suburbs, eluding authorities for months, according to the Associated Press. County officials used food and fencing to gradually lure the animals back to their farm.

One escaped zebra died after being caught in a snare trap. A different zebra was found dead inside the farm in October, resulting in animal cruelty charges against Jerry Holly, the zebras’ owner, the AP reported.

Holly’s attorney told The Washington Post that the zebras were well cared for and healthy, and Holly said that he “looks forward to being able to show in court that there is no merit whatsoever to any of the charges pending against him.”

Sightings of the animals caused a stir in the surrounding areas as locals tried to get the zebras on camera. “There’s a buzz. A lot of people are talking about it,” Rodney Taylor, the chief of the Prince George’s County Animal Services Division told NBC News in September.

The escape inspired a parody account on Twitter called “Maryland Zebra” which recounted the events from the zebras’ perspective. “Well, Well, Well…they got us,” the account tweeted Tuesday afternoon.
