A multitude of outlets reported that Speaker Nancy Pelosi was going to step aside as the highest-ranking Democrat in the House or that she might even retire, but straight from her on Tuesday, it appears that she’s not going anywhere.
“I am running for reelection to Congress and respectfully seek your support,” Pelosi, a Democrat from California, said in a video message posted on her Twitter account. “I would be greatly honored by it and grateful for it.”
As Democrats are set to lose the majority in the House this year, it was widely speculated that Pelosi would step aside from party leadership and allow someone else to take the role of minority leader. More recently, it was reported that she would retire rather than be just Rep. Pelosi. It would have been just one more Democrat announcing retirement rather than facing a humiliating loss.
Her announcement did not signal whether or not she would seek the speakership or minority leader position leaving open the possibility of someone new leading Democrats in the House.
