President Biden Hosts Event to Relaunch Failed Cancer ‘Moonshot’ – 2/2/22

President Biden hosts an event Wednesday in which he hopes to relaunch his failed “cancer moonshot” from 2016.

The event is largely seen as a pivot from COVID, inflation, the economy, foreign policy, the supply chain crisis, the border crisis, and a crime wave as the Biden administration hopes to claim something as a win before the 2022 mid-term elections.

This relaunch is expected to have the goal of halving cancer deaths within the next 25 years. The previous effort was supposed to double the rate of progress to a cure but languished shortly after Obama announced Biden’s effort during his 2016 State of the Union address. The effort created a  Cancer Moonshot Task Force that created a BlueRibbon Panel that was made of seven working groups. The effort was initially funded with $18 billion over 7 years and has struggled to even approach its originally stated goal.

“While the Cancer Moonshot is still alive and kicking, the initiative may not be subject to as much attention when it was first conceived in 2016, likely due to less-than-stellar advancements and the domination of other issues in the public health discourse.”

The event is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. EST.
