About Those Loose Lips: Are Our News Broadcasts Aiding Our Enemies?

‘Military Intelligence’ has long been right up there with ‘jumbo shrimp’, ‘friendly take-over, ‘lead balloon’, and other oxymoron knee-slappers. Yet, it would be impossible to deny in times of war, serious people did serious good that saved lives and helped shorten at least some of the atrocities.

While not formally educated in ‘military intelligence’, beyond what I’ve learned from others, they are some of the ‘best and brightest’ – a fact that history supports. There was a time when whatever was known, thought to be known, rumored to be known was kept behind locked lips. Back in the day, ‘loose lips sink ships,’ (a slogan created by the War Advertising Council), yapping causally, even rhetorically, about what we or ‘the enemy’ was up to was seriously discouraged. Some comments might unnecessarily demoralize the Troops; others might encourage the bad guys; still, others could get you an unwanted visit from unfriendly strangers. Best advice: zip it, Edith.

So why is it that every Evening “Newscast” (especially Fox) eventually features a Talking Helmet or Multi-Star General (ret.) to ‘expertly analyze’ what is going to happen next in the Ukraine theater? In doing so, these be-medaled career military stalwarts opine on every aspect of strategery, war gaming, Do’s and Don’ts of what the Purely Motivated USA or Criminally Minded Vlad should/should not ‘do next’ and the consequences. They often say ‘my sources tell me…’. In many of her reports, FOX News Pentagon Reporter, Jennifer Griffin, (excellent reporter in the image of the sadly-departed Catherine Herridge)  prides herself on including information gathered outside of Press Briefings.

I get it. It’s a 24-7 News Beast that must be fed with…something, regardless how revealing, obsequious, occluding, or vacuous, repulsive it may be. But…how does this serve the accurate information needs of you and me, condescendingly referred to as ‘Average Americans’ or, more famously, ‘the Joe Sixpack family’?

If the analytical offerings made by the Specially Informed Uniformed Contributors are actual facts, doesn’t this serve the Enemy more than the Homeland? Is it ludicrous to suggest the Bad Guys are monitoring The News for any tidbits of invaluable ‘intel’ that just might serve their nefarious purposes?

But what if the Be-Medaled Ones are just serving their (former) employers? What if they are intentionally spouting mis- and disinformation designed to lead The Enemy astray? Or leading the Sixpacks astray? Isn’t that bald-faced lying bordering on fraud and hokum to the American people, too? Or is that perfectly OK because, after all, being Useful Idiots is Useful when War is on the table?
