Most Democrats Don’t Want Biden To Run Again In 2024: POLL

A majority of Democrats do not want President Joe Biden to run for re-election in 2024, per the findings of a new poll released Sunday.

The poll, conducted by ABC News & the Washington Post, showed that just 35% of Democratic-registered and Democratic-leaning independent respondents wanted Biden to run again, while 56% said that the party should nominate somebody else in 2024.

By comparison, Republicans voiced more support for their 2020 nominee, former President Donald Trump. Among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents, 47% said that Trump should be the party’s 2024 nominee, while 46% said that another candidate should be the nominee.

However, Biden’s low approval rating – under 40% per the same poll – as well as policy difficulties faced by his administration on combatting inflation and passing divisive legislation and his age have led several prominent Democrats to call for his retirement in 2024. Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio, who is running against J.D. Vance in the Ohio U.S. Senate election this November, has suggested that “it’s time for a generational move” when asked about another Biden candidacy.

Meanwhile, other Democrats running for office in November have avoided appearing publicly with Biden, fearing that his unpopularity would affect their campaigns. Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Rep. Val Demings of Florida, both of whom are running for the Senate in their respective states, have been noticeably absent during Biden’s campaign visits to their states.

In place of Biden, several names have been circulated as alternatives for the Democratic nomination in 2024. Vice President Kamala Harris and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, both of whom ran against Biden for the nomination in 2024, are frequently mentioned as likely candidates, as is Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California.

Among Republicans, though Trump dominates straw polls for the GOP nomination, several top Republicans and donors have said that he should not run again, citing his conduct on Jan. 6, 2021, and continued insistence that the 2020 election was “stolen.” Others mentioned as contenders for the GOP nomination include Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, among others.

The poll surveyed 908 registered voters and had a margin of error of 3.5%.
