Arizona Voters Give Illegal Migrants Cheaper College Tuition

Voters in Arizona chose to expand access to more affordable education for illegal migrants as part of a ballot initiative in the midterm election.

Arizona voters approved Proposition 308, a measure to allow illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at state universities and community colleges. The measure received 51.2% of the vote, according to The Associated Press.

The proposition requires that recipients benefitting from the decision “graduated from, and spent at least two years attending, an Arizona public or private high school, or homeschool equivalent.”

“I have a sense we’re going to see more and more states try to find creative solutions for folks who are really in legal limbo right now,” Leani García Torres, deputy director of state and local initiatives at the American Immigration Council, previously told Bloomberg Law.

Arizona is now the 23rd state to give illegal migrants the right to in-state tuition, according to AZCentral. The change in policy will now afford “Dreamers,” or illegal immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children, more affordable access to education.

The Biden administration sought to codify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program as a federal regulation in late October, but a court declared it illegal before it went into effect. Still, the White House has vowed to continue to fight for DACA.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has seen a record number of roughly 2.3 million migrants crossing the southern border in fiscal year 2022 ushered in by a number of Biden administration policies to reverse strict policies put in place by the Trump administration, such as “Remain in Mexico,” which forces certain illegal migrants to await court proceedings in Mexico.
