Home for Christmas? Thousands of Flights Canceled Due to Winter Storm

Airlines have already canceled more than two thousand flights as a severe winter storm hits a large portion of the nation today and tomorrow.

More than 1,700 flights were canceled on Thursday. About 800 additional were nixed on Friday and another 385 on Saturday. Chicago and Denver had the largest cuts, but both DFW in Dallas, and ATL in Atlanta have already canceled flights and are expected to deal with huge delays due to the storm.

Southwest has the most canceled U.S. flights on Thursday with almost 700. Delta, United, and American each have about a hundred flights they’ve decided to stop.

The blast of arctic air brings with it heavy winds, freezing to sub-zero temperatures, snow and/or rain to major air transport hubs Thursday and Friday as airlines experience one of the busiest weeks of the year.

Many airlines are offering weather waivers so travelers are advised to get updated flight information before heading to the airport.

Nearly one-third of the U.S. population is under winter weather and/or wind chill alerts as what meteorologists are calling a “bomb cyclone” brings frigid air and severe winter weather across the country.

Some travelers have opted to reschedule flights to avoid getting stuck in the airport for extended periods.
