Social media networking site Parler will shut down for an undisclosed amount of time while the new owner gives it a makeover.
Parlement Technogies Inc, Parler’s parent company, announced Friday that it had agreed to sell the social network to Starboard, a conservative-focused digital media company. Starboard, formerly known as Olympic Media, also owns BizPac Review and American Wire News.
Starboard’s plans for Parler are vague as in a recent announcement, the company said that “No reasonable person believes that a Twitter clone just for conservatives is a viable business any more.” That begs the question of what the media conglomerate intends to turn Parler into during the shutdown.
Parler had previously been working on a deal to be sold to Kanye West before a series of missteps landed the rapper in financial trouble.
Parlement is focusing on the web infrastructure that sites like Parler depend upon so that those sites are no longer beholden to the “ad-hoc regulatory hand of platforms that hate them.” Last September, Parlement bought cloud services company Dynascale Inc.
