House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced Tuesday that he is formally opening impeachment inquiries into President Biden over foreign business dealings.
“These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption,” the California Republican said in remarks outside his office on Capitol Hill. “They warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives. That’s why today I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.”
“This logical next step will give our committees the full power to gather all the facts and answers for the American public,” he said in brief remarks to reporters. “That’s exactly what we want to know, the answers.”
McCarthy said that he is directing the House Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees to begin the inquiries because allegations that Biden and his family profited from shady deals are “serious” and “credible.”
“Taken together, these allegations paint a picture of a culture of corruption,” he added.
The Speaker announced that he is tapping House chairmen Reps. James Comer of Kentucky, Jason Smith of Missouri and Jim Jordan of Ohio to lead the inquiry.
McCarthy told Fox News in an interview last month that an inquiry would give Congress the “legal power to get all the information they need” in order to decide whether or not to impeach Joe Biden.
