Mccarthy Loses Speakership; Biden Loses Whatever Deal They Made Together

Just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, the House of Representatives shot down a motion to table Rep. Matt Gaetz’s “motion to vacate” that would end Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s leadership of the House. Two hours later, McCarthy was out.

11 Republicans joined all House Democrats in choosing not to block the motion to table. But, when it came time to count the votes on his ouster, the margin was just 6 votes as McCarthy lost 216-210. This is the first time ever that such a vote has succeeded.

Now the House will need to select a new Speaker which will be chosen by a simple majority in the chamber. Votes will be held until a majority agrees on McCarthy’s replacement.

The Republicans who sided with Democrats to allow the vote to push McCarthy out were Eli Crane (AZ), Andy Biggs (AZ), Ken Buck (CO), Tim Burchett (TN), Eli Crane (AZ), Warren Davidson (OH), Matt Gaetz (FL), Bob Good (VA), Nancy Mace (SC), Cory Mills (FL), Matt Rosendale (MT), and Victoria Spartz (IN).

Gaetz said that former President Trump supported his efforts to push McCarthy out.

“My conversation with the former President leave [sic] me with great confidence that I did the right thing,” Gaetz remarked.

Another loser in the House battle might be President Biden. The president indicated over the weekend that he and McCarthy had made some sort of deal on Ukraine funding so that Democrats would support the continuing resolution to prevent a government shutdown.

When a reporter asked Biden if he would trust McCarthy when another deal-making opportunity came up, Biden answered, “we just made one about Ukraine. So, we’ll find out.”

The specifics of that deal have not been made public, nor did McCarthy acknowledge that any deal on Ukraine had been struck. If there was a deal, it is now dead.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
