Michigan Dems Rush Gun Control Through State Legislature Ahead Of Republican House Majority

Michigan Democrats voted to rush gun control legislation through before Republicans take the state house majority in January, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday.

Democrat Michigan State Sen. Dayna Polehanki told reporters that the Democrats passed a ban on possessing bump stocks and unserialized firearms, sometimes referred to as “ghost guns,” because “Republicans won’t do [it] on their own,” according to the Detroit Free Press. Republicans won a majority in the state senate by a single seat in the 2024 election. The bump stock provision passed with three Republicans supporting the Democrats, with the ghost gun law passing along party lines.

“I have a strong core belief that the people’s constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms and the right of self defense is absolute and cannot be restricted, infringed or regulated to the point that a law abiding citizen would find themselves in violation of laws just for having certain types of guns,” Republican State Rep. Jim DeSana told the Detroit Free Press on the bump stock ban.

Bump stocks became a contentious issue after one was used in the Las Vegas shooting, which killed 58 people and wounded 850, according to the Detroit Free Press. Bump stocks allow for the rapid fire of a gun by allowing a user to pull the trigger faster, achieving a comparable rate of fire to that of an automatic weapon without changing the trigger mechanism.

Former President Donald Trump’s administration enacted a bump stock ban in response to the shooting in 2018. However, The Supreme Court blocked the regulation in June, saying it was a violation of the Second Amendment.

“Ghost guns” are also a national focus on gun legislation, which are guns without serial numbers, usually built with parts kits. The Biden administration enacted a regulation in 2022 that would require the parts kits to be serialized, with the law currently facing a challenge by gun rights advocates in the Supreme Court.

Polehanki did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
