Over a dozen officials who worked on former special counsel Jack Smith’s team to prosecute President Donald Trump are being fired, a Department of Justice (DOJ) official confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Acting Attorney General James McHenry determined the officials could not be trusted in “faithfully implementing the president’s agenda,” Fox News reported.
Officials whose positions were terminated include Molly Gaston, J.P. Cooney, Anne McNamara and Mary Dohrmann, according to NBC News.
Gaston also worked on prosecuting former Trump advisor Steve Bannon on contempt of Congress charges, along with the early stages of a case against a pro-life activist who went to jail for blocking access to an abortion clinic.
Smith resigned in January ahead of Trump taking office.
After Trump’s election victory, Smith’s two cases against Trump — the classified documents case in Florida and 2020 election case in Washington, D.C. — were both dismissed.
“You played a significant role in prosecuting President Trump,” the letter sent to dismissed officials states, according to NBC News. “The proper functioning of government critically depends on the trust superior officials place in their subordinates. Given your significant role in prosecuting the president, I do not believe that the leadership of the department can trust you to assist in implement[ing] the president’s agenda faithfully.”
