The current government shutdown, maintained by Democrats’ refusal to reopen the government, is 36 days old. According to the Air Traffic Controllers Union chief, the damage being done by Schumer and company could last into the holidays.
National Air Traffic Controllers Union Chief Nick Daniels told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Thursday that the damage being done by Democrats’ shutdown strategy could “take months” to repair, making Thanksgiving and Christmas travel plans uncertain for travellers.
The Schumer-orchestrated shutdown forces air traffic controllers to work without pay. Some have to get second jobs, others just have to leave the understaffed profession because they can’t make ends meet while Congress plays politics with their lives.
To manage the risk that the shutdown is imposing, the FAA announced that it is cutting thousands of flights per day in high-volume markets.
“Our sole role is to make sure that we keep this airspace as safe as possible. Reduction in capacity at 40 of our locations. This is not based on light airline travel locations. This is about where the pressure is and how to really deviate the pressure,” Bedford said during a Wednesday press conference.
Short-term, this will keep the flying public safe while disrupting travel for a large portion of the nation. Long-term, the US could permanently lose experienced air traffic controllers to other jobs, and that could impact travel for a very long time.
Democrats have insisted that the government stay shut down unless Republicans agree to continue COVID-era subsidies to keep the failing Obamacare program afloat and force taxpayers to pay for healthcare for illegal immigrants.
