Eric Swalwell Reportedly Referred To DOJ Over Alleged Mortgage Fraud

Democratic California Rep. Eric Swalwell was slapped with a criminal referral over alleged mortgage and tax fraud on Wednesday, according to NBC News.

Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte claimed in a Wednesday letter sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi that Swalwell may have made false or misleading statements in loan documents involving the purchase of a Washington, D.C. house, NBC News first reported, citing an anonymous source. Additionally, the FHFA’s acting inspector general is also probing the mortgage fraud allegations, the same anonymous source told the outlet.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) declined to comment. The FHFA did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

“As the most vocal critic of [President] Donald Trump over the last decade and as the only person who still has a surviving lawsuit against him, the only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me,” Swalwell said in a statement provided to the DCNF. “Like James Comey and John Bolton, Adam Schiff and Lisa Cook, Letitia James and the dozens more to come – I refuse to live in fear in what was once the freest country in the world.”

“Of course, I will not end my lawsuit against him,” Swalwell added. “And I will not stop speaking out against the President and speaking up for Californians. As Mark Twain said, ‘Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.’ Mr. President, do better. Be Better.”

In August, Democratic California Sen. Adam Schiff set up a legal defense fund following the DOJ’s probe of his finances over allegations of mortgage fraud. Bondi appointed Ed Martin as a special prosecutor on Aug. 8 to probe mortgage fraud allegations against both Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James and Schiff.

Moreover, Pulte similarly referred Federal Reserve Board Gov. Lisa Cook to the DOJ in August over allegations that she committed mortgage fraud, setting off a probe into her.

Swalwell has notably made headlines as a vocal critic of Trump in recent years. He has also previously referred to the president as a “dictator.”
