Protesters Seeking To Foil New York City ICE Raid Arrested After Standoff With Barricades, Garbage To Block Agents

Rioters in New York City attempted to block U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from leaving a parking garage Saturday, leading to at least 18 arrests.

As many as 200 people gathered outside, piling garbage and blocking the entrance to the garage with their bodies, The New York Times reported. New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch blamed ICE for the clash with the protesters, claiming the shows of force by federal agents placed police officers, citizens and the agents at risk, according to the New York Post.

Rioters threw police barricades and planters at the ICE agents, the Post reported, with no known injuries despite police making 18 arrests. The riot appeared to thwart the planned operation by ICE, according to independent journalist Talia Jane.

ICE facilities in Chicago and Portland, Oregon, have been the scene of multiple riots as opposition to the agency’s operations targeting illegal immigrants intensified. During ICE operations in Chicago, agents were reportedly attacked by multiple assailants who used cars to ram vehicles during one Oct. 4 incident. Chicago police allegedly stood down rather than assist ICE agents being assaulted.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a Sept. 26 post on X there had been multiple violent attacks on an ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois. In Portland, Oregon violent protesters reportedly attacked conservative journalists covering the riots and allegedly planned to use lasers against aircraft used by federal law enforcement agencies.

Two people were killed during a Sept. 24 shooting, including the gunman, who committed suicide. In Texas, there were at least two previous incidents when shots were fired at ICE or Border Patrol facilities in July, with ten people being charged with attempted murder in connection with the incident in Alvarado, Texas.

Rioting spread to multiple cities after initially flaring up in Los Angeles following an ICE operation in June. Some Democrats are demanding the agency cease its operations to “restore order.”
