President Donald Trump announced Saturday he will be teaming up with World Golf Hall of Famer Jack Nicklaus to refurbish the golf courses at a key military base near the nation’s capital.
Trump took part in a Saturday aerial tour of Maryland’s Andrews Air Force Base, where he met with the celebrated golfer, Reuters reported, citing a White House source.
“We’re going to Andrews Air Force Base to do some work especially for our great Air Force. We’re doing some fix-up of the base which we need. We are going to try to reintroduce the golf course,” the president and well-known golf enthusiast said to reporters before leaving the White House to meet with Nicklaus and tour the base.
Trump added that the all-time great golfer is involved in the effort to bring back the base’s recreational facility.
“Jack will be the architect, he will design it,” Trump said. “Two existing courses that are in very bad shape. So, we can for very little money fix it up toward the Air Force base. And we’re looking at other things over at Andrews.”
Known by his nickname, “the Golden Bear,” Nicklaus, 85, is widely considered to be among the greatest golfers of all time. He won 18 major championships — the most in the sport’s history — over a 24-year span, from 1962 to 1986.
The retired athlete has recently focused on golf course design, and his company, Nicklaus Design, has worked on 425 courses across the world, according to The Associated Press (AP).
Joint Base Andrews is known as the airfield from which the president most frequently departs when he travels on Air Force One. Nicknamed “America’s Airfield,” the base is located in Prince George’s County, about a dozen miles from the White House. It includes both Andrews Air Force Base and Naval Air Facility Washington, which merged to form the joint base in 2009.
“There are many missions being accomplished here by many units from many branches of the military,” the base’s website states. “Often called the military’s premier joint base, Andrews is home to Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine units, and even hosts a chapter of the Civil Air Patrol.”
The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
