Bougainville: A golden opportunity for President Trump

While most Americans may not be familiar with Bougainville, this autonomous region of Papua New Guinea presents a remarkable opportunity for President Trump to secure a strategic and captivating win that aligns seamlessly with his “Make America Great Again” philosophy.

Nestled in the South Pacific, Bougainville is a hidden gem rich in natural resources, including significant deposits of gold and copper. For the Trump administration, this underappreciated region is ripe for the picking.

A single phone call from President Trump or a high-ranking official could yield a series of beneficial outcomes. First, it could thwart China’s attempts to establish control over Bougainville and its vast resources. This is an encroachment that could substantially shift the balance of power in the Pacific.

Access to the Panguna mine, one of the world’s largest copper and gold mines, could be facilitated through a U.S.-led development initiative, boosting American economic interests and job creation.

Moreover, this move would provide the U.S. Navy with a strategically located deep-water port, which is an essential asset in a region critical to global maritime security. Beyond military implications, the U.S. could also tap into some of the world’s richest fishing waters, further enhancing national interests in the region.

Bougainville’s newly re-elected President Ishmael Toroama has expressed a fervent desire for independence and a strong alignment with the United States, potentially even pursuing statehood. However, he finds himself at a crossroads: align with the U.S. or with China.

While he has made it clear that he favors American partnership, he inches closer to finalizing an arrangement with China due to the previous U.S. disinterest.

In 2023, President Toroama sought to forge a strategic partnership with the United States, but the Biden administration’s last-minute dismissal effort left him feeling marginalized. Nevertheless, despite this setback, he remains open to dialogue and a potential alliance.

Creating a strategic relationship with Bougainville could serve as a significant redemption for the Trump administration, considering the perceived failures of the current administration. However, if the U.S. remains passive, China will likely cement its influence over Bougainville, gaining access to immense reserves of copper and gold, a critical deep-water port, and prime fishing territories that could aid in China’s economic dominance.

The Australians, fully aware of the stakes, have highlighted the risks associated with Chinese economic overtures, which often morph into de facto dependencies.

Organizations like the Heritage Foundation, which aligns with Trump’s vision, echo this sentiment, asserting, “The U.S. must capitalize on this opportunity or risk giving Beijing an upper hand in a vital Indo-Pacific area, where the scales of power and influence could easily tip in their favor.”

While President Trump faces numerous pressing issues, such as developments in Venezuela, his extensive energy and proven ability to juggle complex matters simultaneously mean that Bougainville’s opportunity does not have to fall by the wayside. This is a chance he should seize without delay.

True, negotiating the finer points and finalizing a strategic partnership will take time and effort. However, all it would take to initiate this significant win is a straightforward phone call to President Toroama, extending a genuine expression of interest and an invitation to Washington for discussions.

The clock is ticking, and China is poised to finalize its deal. Yet, President Trump still has the chance to secure a victory for the United States, thwarting China’s ambitions once again.

Recent reports from The Daily Mail indicate that President Toroama is not only ready to negotiate resource access, aligning directly with Trump’s focus on American interests, but also willing to discuss broader terms. He has stated, “If the U.S. asserts its support for Bougainville’s independence, then I can confidently say, ‘The Panguna mine is here. The choice is yours.’”

Interestingly, Bougainville already indicated its desire for independence through a non-binding referendum in 2019, in which an overwhelming 98% of voters expressed the wish to separate from Papua New Guinea.

If Bougainville were to achieve nationhood, it would likely rank among the smallest countries in the world, yet its 300,000 residents could find themselves incredibly wealthy, with an estimated $60 billion in gold beneath their feet.

President Trump has previously floated the idea of expanding U.S. territory, like purchasing Greenland or even making Canada the 51st state. But these concepts are fraught with complications. In contrast, Bougainville offers no such geopolitical pitfalls. Its leadership is not just open to an alliance with America; they actively desire it.

For President Trump, who revels in winning, this opportunity presents a straightforward path to a significant and strategically advantageous accomplishment in his second term. With a simple phone call, an invitation to Washington, and the will to forge an alliance, President Trump could lay the groundwork for one of the most consequential foreign policy victories of his presidency.

It’s time to act.
