‘Crazy Person’ Charged With Breaking Windows At Vance’s Home Is Mentally Troubled Repeat Arrestee

The man arrested for allegedly breaking windows at Vice President JD Vance’s Ohio home on Monday has a mental health record and was previously accused of other vandalism, court documents show.

William DeFoor, 26, walked onto Vance’s Cincinnati property while he and his family were away and broke four windows before police arrested him, authorities said. DeFoor was last charged in Hamilton County in 2024 for alleged vandalism, following another case in which he was deemed mentally unfit for trial, according to court records.

DeFoor now faces multiple charges over the incident at Vance’s house, documents show. The records do not yet list a defense attorney.

The man was arrested in April 2023 near the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine building after police said he refused their orders to leave, records show. He was also charged with refusing to disclose information to police upon arrest.

“The Court finds that the defendant is not capable of understanding the nature and objective of the proceedings against the defendant and is not capable of presently assisting in the defense,” a judge wrote in November 2023 about DeFoor.

“There is not a substantial probability that the defendant will become competent to stand trial within the time allotted by law if provided a course of treatment,” the judge said, dismissing the case.

DeFoor was later charged with two counts of vandalism in August 2024 but was released “pending treatment,” court documents show. Images obtained by WKRC-TV from the case show broken windows at an interior design store in Hyde Park.

“I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home,” Vance said in an X post Monday morning. “As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I’m grateful to the Secret Service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly.”
