Nancy Guthrie Just Got Too boring

So, the networks dumped her like a hot potato. I wrote weeks ago, and Nancy Guthrie has been missing for seven weeks now, that I thought it was wrong to devote so much of a network’s news time to a victim. This woman, who nobody in America would have ever heard of, was supposedly kidnapped from her bed in her home in beautiful Arizona. It is only because she is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, a popular host on mainstream media that this case got all of the attention that it did.. To focus so much attention on a singular victim. minimizes the situation for other people who may find themselves in a similar unfortunate situation.

First, let’s look at some numbers just in the USA…

  • 8,460 deaths each day
  • 2,300 people are reported missing each day
  • A murder occurs every 31 minutes
  • A rape occurs every 4 minutes
  • A violent crime every 24 seconds

I am in no way minimizing the loss of Nancy Guthrie, but in the seven weeks since she was first reported missing, over 112,000 Americans have suffered the same fate. Is one of them more important just because the victim comes from a celebrity family? Of course not, nor should the event have garnered 24/7 attention on a major news outlet. The fact that you hardly hear of the situation, the woman, or the family at all, gives credence to my belief. We are still a tabloid country. The only difference over the years is that we used to get the shocking news at the supermarket checkout, now it is on 24/7 news stations that crave stories to fill the air for their advertisers.

It took our military action against Iran to slowly usurp the headlines and all of the various talk shows away from the Guthrie case. I cannot vouch for MSNOW or CNN because like most people, those networks are becoming less relevant by the day, but FOX seemed to have all hands on deck to cover every possible angle of the mystery that has consumed Savannah’s mom. The only person excused was Trey Yingts, who was dodging incoming missiles and drones in Tel Aviv. It was a tremendous waste of man-hours, and in retrospect, the network will probably wish they had not jumped in with both feet.

The Guthrie case exposes a seedy side of human behavior. Sometimes, there is no logical explanation for another person’s actions. If this was about money and hoping the family would issue a huge VENMO payment weeks ago. The fact that this has gone on for two months and there appear to be no demands for money or reaction to offers from the Guthrie family, would probably indicate that there is nothing to trade for. Nancy Guthrie was not a young woman, and she required daily medications. Add that to the stress of the abduction, and chances are good that she is no longer with us.

All of the souls lost or abducted daily should be in our prayers. But let’s hope that unless the person is one who would impact national security if taken against their will, that a modicum of commonsense and restraint go into the reporting.
