IS IT OVER? Trump Announces Ceasefire with Iran

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday evening that a ceasefire agreement has been reached between the United States and Iran.

The agreement will end all hostilities by both sides for two weeks and will include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, allowing needed petroleum and petroleum products to reach countries that require them.

The ceasefire will give both sides time to put the final touches on a 10-point peace proposal brokered by Pakistan and came just 2 hours before Trump’s deadline. After 8 pm ET Tuesday, the War Department was set to execute strikes on key Iranian infrastructure.

Trump called the ceasefire a “double-sided ceasefire,” likely meaning that Iran has agreed to stop attacking ships in the strait and the United States has agreed not to bomb them back to the Stone Age.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote. “This will be a double-sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning long-term peace with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”

The contents of the Pakistan-brokered 10-point peace deal have not been made public.
