House Democrats declared war Wednesday on Democratic Texas congressional candidate Maureen Galindo, who stated she wanted to imprison “American Zionists.”
Galindo wrote in an Instagram post on May 13 that she wanted to turn an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing center into a “prison for American Zionists” and former ICE officers for so-called “human trafficking.” Democratic Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida and Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey vowed to force a vote on expelling her from the House if she were to be sworn in, arguing that her statement were “insane” and “antisemitic.”
“If for some reason, Maureen Galindo wins the Congressional election in TX-35, as soon as she is sworn in, we will force a vote to expel her every single day we are here,” the congressmen said in a joint statement. “Maureen’s insane, antisemitic views — including putting Americans in concentration camps — have no place in our Party or country.”
Galindo finished first in the Democratic primary in Texas’ 35th district and is facing a runoff with sheriff’s deputy Johnny Garcia. A runoff occurs when no primary candidate receives a majority of the vote.
A mysterious PAC is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to boost Galindo’s electoral chances. Many Democrats alleged that Republicans are attempting to help Galindo to ensure that the Republican candidate runs against a weak candidate.
“House Republican leadership must immediately cease propping up this antisemitic candidacy,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Suzan DelBene said Tuesday.
Galindo claimed that Zionists must be imprisoned because they are hurting Jewish people.
“When Maureen gets into Congress, she’ll write legislation so that all Zionism and support of Zionism is undoubtedly Anti-Semitic, since it’s Zionists harming the Semites,” Galindo’s campaign said on Instagram. “She’ll turn Karnes ICE Detention Center into a prison for American Zionists and former ICE officers for human trafficking.”
Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also condemned Galindo’s remark and called on the super PAC funding her to be “exposed.”
“This is absolutely disgusting. This bigoted garbage and antisemitism should be nowhere near our politics. If you’re in TX-35, vote for @johnnygarciatx. And the donors behind the Republican super PAC funding her should be exposed,” Ocasio-Cortez said on X.
Galindo also told Axios she would have any elected officials or candidates tried for treason if they had ever taken money from pro-Israel lobbyists.
Track AIPAC, a left-wing organization that supports anti-Zionist candidates, yanked its endorsements for Galindo on Tuesday.
