A Small group of Americans said loyalty to President Donald Trump is the thing they like the least about the GOP, according to a Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll released Wednesday.
The new survey found that 12% of U.S. adults responded Trump or “loyalty to Trump” when asked what they dislike most about the Republican Party. Another 4% of adults said they disliked the GOP for not backing Trump enough, according to the poll.
Of those surveyed, 4% mentioned “ineffective” or “weak and unqualified” leadership as what they dislike most about the Republican Party, the poll suggests.
One male independent voter based in New Jersey said that he thinks Republicans “don’t think for themselves, only follow whatever the lying, arrogant Donald Trump says,” the Washington Post reported. Meanwhile, a female independent voter from Tennessee mentioned “Trump’s hold on the party” as her least favorite part about the GOP, according to the Post’s survey.
“Americans are overwhelmingly rejecting the Democrats’ out-of-touch agenda while rallying behind President Trump and Republicans’ commonsense policies,” Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kiersten Pels told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement. “As Democrats double down on fringe issues like handouts for illegals and boys in girls sports, President Trump-backed candidates continue dominating nationwide.”
The two most common criticisms of the Democratic Party were that their positions were overly liberal or across various issues (12%), and that they were too weak or insufficiently willing to stand up to Trump (10%), according to the poll. One female independent voter in California said that Democrats are “too woke” and “focus on issues not central to Americans,” per the survey.
The poll’s release comes as Trump and Republicans face mounting criticism about the U.S. affordability crisis, which has been exacerbated by rising food and energy costs amid the war with Iran. A Gallup poll released on May 22 found that Americans’ confidence in the economy has plunged to a nearly four-year low.
The poll was conducted online from April 24 to 28 among 1,267 U.S. adults across the nation. The survey’s overall results have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
