Is There a Happy Medium?

I am a news and politics junkie. I am addicted, and 24/7 news is my drug of choice. What does satisfying that craving really do for me? Not much except to increase my frustration, angst, and bewilderment. The latter is caused by the sheer lunacy of the Left / Socialists / Communists. I am still confused about how these people can take the oath of office pledging to defend the Constitution. They would just as soon use it as scrap paper. The people in my circle have varying degrees of interest in what is happening at the statehouse or the White House, ranging from avid to burying their heads in the sand. Both extremes, and everything in between, are understandable, and I often wonder which is the happiest, healthiest, and most informed.

I will admit the news, especially in 2026, can be upsetting and downright depressing. Some of the stories we hear and read seem more like fiction than reality; they are that bizarre. Bizarre is reality today, and you have to have a strong stomach to absorb as much as people on this end of the spectrum subject themselves to. Living at this end, I often wonder if I should just shut it off for a bit, work on my guitar or sax, take a walk, or read a book. The draw is too strong, and the need for more is real. I have to watch more so I don’t miss an important topic.

The people on the other end amaze me, and I even admit I might be envious of them. They feel that what is happening in the news has no direct impact on their lives, so why worry about it? Most have no social presence, and Facebook, X, and Instagram are just a waste of time. These people have plenty of time for other interests and tend to protect their children from the news by homeschooling them. They also tend to be very religious, depending on God above to keep them safe from whatever is happening in Washington, Ukraine, Iran, or wherever humans are wreaking chaos. These people are happy and at peace with the fact that there will be another tomorrow, despite what happens today.

Extremes are not good in any facet of our lives, but we must face the reality that everything in the world impacts us in some fashion. Whether it is our safety, security, financial well-being, or impact on our culture, it impacts our lives whether you see it happen or you have your head in the sand.

The next six months are going to be dynamic and maybe a bit disturbing. The future of our country is at risk. That is not hyperbole, but reality. If nothing else, and your vote in November is how you choose to react, do so wisely. Pick your source of information carefully, as the narrative varies widely from channel to channel. The world is going to keep spinning, whether you choose to watch and participate or be an innocent bystander looking up at the sky. I guess I like to keep my eyes on the road and be ready for what is around every corner, but stopping at a rest area to stretch my legs and clear my mind is never a bad idea. Staying informed while making sure you give enough attention to life and those around you might be the best route to take. We will meet you down the road.

Image 3: Represents the personal reflection and internal struggle you share as a self-aware news junkie who sees value in both engagement and stepping back.
