Permian Basin Innovations Fuel Hope For Energy Independence

President Donald Trump’s energy independence promise could depend on Permian Basin drilling.

Despite 10% of the world’s oil supply being reportedly trapped behind the Strait of Hormuz, energy industry insiders report expansions to U.S. oil production. The Permian Basin region hosts some of the largest oil and gas deposits in the world.

The U.S. Department of Energy did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

“American operators have continued to invest in the Permian Basin and we have seen in the last year alone, a million barrel increase in production despite low prices and price volatility. It is often said that the next Permian Basin is the Permian Basin and our members believe that to be true,” a Permian Basin Petroleum Association (PBPA) spokesperson told the DCNF. “The geology in the Permian Basin of Southeast New Mexico and West Texas is unmatched. Together, the region is the largest producer of oil and gas in the free world, accounting for a record 6.6 million barrels of oil per day.”

The spokesperson also told the DCNF that the association appreciates the National Energy Dominance Council and the administration for developing a closer working relationship with operators in the region.

“Our members would like to continue to see these efforts yield durable and defensible fruit in areas like streamlining federal environmental permitting and reform of existing rules to end the weaponization of the endangered species act,” the spokesperson said. “We also support investments from existing Department of Energy funds to more rapidly deploy water treatment technologies to further the beneficial reuse efforts occurring in the Permian Basin.”

The American Petroleum Institute (API) also supports continued innovation in the Permian Basin.

“The Permian Basin remains one of the world’s most prolific energy-producing regions, driving record U.S. oil and natural gas production through continued innovation and advanced technology to help meet growing demand for reliable, affordable American energy while strengthening our energy security and global leadership,” API Vice President of Upstream Policy Holly Hopkins told the DCNF. “The administration’s actions to restore a more predictable leasing program are reinforcing investment in the Permian, with the recent record-setting New Mexico federal lease sale underscoring continued demand for responsible domestic energy development.”

One innovation fueled by the Permian Basin’s oilfields comes in the form of Project Kilby, which is a recent 20-year agreement between Chevron and Microsoft to build a Microsoft-operated data center in the region.

“Chevron is helping lead the next phase of American AI growth by addressing its most fundamental constraint: energy,” a Chevron spokesperson told the DCNF. “US power demand for data centers is projected to more than double in 2027 vs. 2025. The race for AI isn’t just about chips or data, it is about delivering abundant, affordable, and reliable power at scale and with speed.

“We are providing approximately 2.67 GW of power using affordable and reliable natural gas. First power is expected in 2028.”

The facility projected to support 2,000 permanent jobs and generate over $10 billion in state and local tax revenue upon completion, Chevron stated in a press release Monday. Project Kilby aims to mitigate its impact on the power grid by leveraging the Permian Basin’s natural gas supply to deliver approximately 2.67 gigawatts of power to the facility.

“Two great American companies are coming together at the intersection of energy and technology,” Chevron told the DCNF.
