Tech Giant Joins Forces With California Following Massive Feud With Trump

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday that California has entered into a partnership with Anthropic following President Donald Trump’s feud with the artificial intelligence giant.

The partnership with Anthropic’s AI model, Claude, will give state agencies in California access to the program at 50% off and provide free workforce training. The AI tool is meant to help with drafting and summarizing documents, analyzing information and supplementing day-to-day work, according to a press release from Newsom’s office.

The deal comes at a time when the Trump administration has been restricting the rollouts of most recent Anthropic models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5 and called for a limited release of OpenAI’s new models due to national security concerns.

The administration and Anthropic prominently fell out in early 2026 when the company refused to permit the military to conduct surveillance and weapons automation with its AI models, Reuters reported. This prompted the federal government to place Claude’s parent company on a supply chain blacklist.

Anthropic and Newsom’s office each did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.

The California Department of Technology and California Office of Emergency Services is partnering to use Claude for cyber defense. Claude Security and Claude Code will be used for scanning, triaging, and patching state code, according to the press release.

“This partnership is about using technology the California way: responsibly, transparently, and in service of people. AI should not replace the human work of government; it should help our workers move faster, solve problems more effectively, and deliver better results for Californians,” Newsom said via his press release.

“As a California company, we feel a real responsibility to our home state. We’re honored to expand our partnership with California’s agencies and to put Claude to work for the people who keep this state running,” Kate Jensen, Anthropic’s head of America said in the press release.

Trump had slammed Anthropic in an explosive February post to Truth Social calling them a “RADICAL LEFT” company.

“The Leftwing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War, and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution,” he wrote at the time. “Their selfishness is putting AMERICAN LIVES at risk, our Troops in danger, and our National Security in JEOPARDY.”

Anthropic’s Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5 got shut down on June 12 after only being live for three days after the government deemed it posed security risks. Claude Mythos 5 has since been restored on June 26 to select partners, according to a post by Anthropic.

“Since June 12, we’ve been working closely with the U.S. government to restore access to Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure,” Anthropic wrote in a Friday X post.

Trump has also called for limited release of new OpenAI models, GPT 5.6 amidst security concerns to enable the government to evaluate frameworks for the security of new artificial intelligence models.
