China Pumps $33.5 Billion Into Africa In Six Months

China invested up to $33.5 billion within the last six months, a recent report found.

The record investment exposes China’s expanding economic influence across Africa through the Belt and Road Initiative, as Beijing pours into green projects in Africa, according to the China Belt and Road Initiative Investment report.

“56% of China’s energy engagement was green,” read the report’s key findings. The total amount spent is equivalent to the total spending in 2025.

In Zambia, a Chinese company is building a 660 MW coal-fired power plant, while metals and mining reach a record high, the report states.

The report’s author, Christoph Nedophil, did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Semafor reported that Ethiopia’s Smart Energy green power and ammonia project was the largest investment.

The strife from the Strait of Hormuz crisis may further push Chinese investment in green energy and manufacturing, according to an analysis by Shanghai-based Green Finance & Development Center and The University of Queensland in Australia.

“A reason for Africa’s continued strong engagement may be increasing impacts and risks of tariffs from both the US and the EU, where some parts of Africa enjoy lower tariffs due to EU or US investments in the region,” the report read.

The analysts point to Morocco as an example, where car makers from the EU and China are utilizing the “manufacturing costs and proximity to the EU market.”

Hydro, solar, and wind make up 51.38% of China’s energy engagement supply chain.

“However, risks emerge due to uncertainty of possible growing trade sanctions vis-à-vis China, including, possibly, from the European Union (EU), and a risk of secondary sanctions for trade with China should the US aim to pursue this,” according to the China Belt and Road Initiative Investment report.

“Nevertheless, with strong momentum in emerging economies, the mainstay of the BRI, I expect Chinese BRI engagement to continue on a strong growth trajectory in 2026,” the report concluded.
