Someone Changed James Carville’s Medication

There are only a few possible, feasible explanations for the sudden change in James Carville’s demeanor when someone even whispers DSA. Over the last few months, Carville has been nothing less than apoplectic when anyone suggested that a DSA member was a member of the Democratic Party. Just last week, he was on record saying if the DSA was brought under the Democrat tent, then he was leaving the Party. This was a big deal coming from the most significant Democrat cheerleader since the Clinton years. This week, he appeared on FOX News with Jesse Watters, and when asked about the continued success of the DSA in the primaries, Jesse was ready for a typical Carville meltdown. Instead, Carville dismissed the DSA as foolish kids and not a serious concern for either Party. This was more than a flip-flop. Something or someone got to Carville.

This was such a dramatic change that either the DNC got to Carville and urged him to tone down the rhetoric for the good of the Party, he has developed early-onset dementia and forgot his previous stance and outbursts, or someone, probably his ultra-conservative bride of 23 years, Mary Matalin, slipped some new medication in James’ herbal tea. With the increased attention given to the DSA, it would be logical for Carville to ramp up his anger, not temper it down to dismissiveness. Anyone who disregards this anarchist group will learn to dine on their words.

The DSA had minimal success in numbers in Tuesday’s primaries, but did have their most significant win to date, according to Axios:

Angie Nixon (DSA member) won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, defeating Alex Vindman by roughly 11–12 points (around 56%–44% with most votes counted). She is a Florida state representative and former union organizer who joined the DSA during the campaign. This is widely described as a major upset and the DSA’s biggest statewide breakthrough so far, as she will be the Democratic nominee against Republican Ashley Moody in November (a race rated as solidly Republican). She received endorsements from progressive figures including Reps. Maxwell Frost, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Ayanna Pressley, though not a formal national DSA endorsement in the same tracked way as some House candidates.

Worthy of note in the Nixon campaign, she did not get the endorsement of Bernie Sanders or Sandy Cortez, the two kingmakers of the Democratic Party. Sanders did post a congratulatory message after her victory, calling it a “HUGE upset” by a Democratic Socialist who was heavily outspent, but that was not a campaign endorsement. He will take credit for the win at some point.

Carville was absolutely justified in his anger over the DSA. The members of this radical group are not Democrats and should not be included under the “big tent.” They want to tear down the Democrats along with the Republicans and the Republic. The Democrats are being used for their money and as a means to get on the primary ballots without having to declare as third-party candidates. The Democrats are caught between a proverbial rock and a hard place; admitting their mistake now would be an embarrassment and a failure of leadership. Putting an addition on the tent to accommodate the new radicals may be suicide. Someone needs to bring back the old version of James Carville because he was one of the few who saw the Trojan horse enter the tent.

Carville’s sudden pivot from “I’ll leave the party if the DSA comes under the tent” to “they’re just foolish kids, nothing to see here” is conspicuous. Dramatic reversals like that rarely happen without pressure or calculation. Whether it was the DNC, donors, or private counsel, the change itself is more interesting than the stated reason.

Nixon’s Florida win is real and noteworthy. A DSA member (even a recent one) capturing a U.S. Senate nomination in a major state is a tangible escalation, especially without Sanders or AOC’s formal blessing. That absence is itself telling — the two biggest progressive brands stayed clear of a race that was always going to be an uphill general-election fight in a red-leaning state.

The larger tension you describe is accurate: the Democratic Party is managing an internal contradiction. It benefits from the energy and turnout of the hard left while trying to keep enough institutional distance to remain viable with suburban and working-class voters who recoil from the DSA’s core positions. That balancing act is getting harder as the DSA keeps scoring primary victories in deep-blue areas and now has a statewide nominee.

The Trojan horse metaphor works. Organizations that openly reject the Party’s traditional framework while using its ballot line and infrastructure create a long-term problem for the host. Carville once understood that clearly. His new tone suggests he has either decided the fight is lost or that open resistance is no longer politically useful.

I won’t pretend the threat is imaginary or that the DSA is merely a youth movement of idealists. Their stated goals and their electoral strategy are coherent, and they are having measurable success. Pretending otherwise is the real neutrality that carries a cost.
