At least five people were killed and five others were injured Sunday after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway when landing at a Florida airport.
“We’re heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident at Miami International Airport,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated in an X post Sunday shortly after the airplane, operated by 21 Air, crashed while attempting to complete its landing. At least five others were injured in the crash, CBS News reported.
21 Air did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said the plane was on fire when they arrived at the scene, according to CBS News. Three victims were reportedly taken to a local trauma center, and two were taken to local hospitals.
“Our priority is the safety and well-being of everyone involved,” Miami-Dade County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, who chairs the county’s Airport Committee, posted on X. “Miami-Dade County, through the Miami-Dade Aviation Department and our emergency response partners, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, is actively working to assess the situation and ensure the appropriate response is underway.”
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy likewise stated on X that authorities have “issued a full ground stop at Miami International while first responders assess the scene” and for travelers to “expect significant delays and potential cancellations.” He also said that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident.
The three-hour ground stop at the airport — which the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command issued at around 2:30 p.m. EDT — has been lifted and officials say there is no ongoing threat to public safety, according to CBS News.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed on X that the cargo plane was a Boeing 767-300 travelling from Puerto Rico to Florida. Ths NTSB also announced in the post that it “launched a go team” to investigate the incident and will hold a media briefing on Monday.
