WASHINGTON — Homeland Security Investigations agents conducted a predawn search early Monday at the Washington, D.C.-area home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) pursuant to a judicially authorized warrant, the Justice Department confirmed. The action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.
The search, which began around 5 a.m. on October 12, involved HSI special agents—the criminal investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security—executing a warrant secured by the Department of Justice. Agents were observed outside the residence in the Northeast quadrant of the city, and neighbors reported hearing activity and seeing investigators remove boxes from the home.
A Justice Department spokesperson stated: “Today in the Washington, D.C., area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.” The statement did not name Omar or provide further details. Sources familiar with the matter told multiple outlets, including Fox News, CBS News, and Reuters, that the probe centers on allegations of immigration fraud and false statements involving paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child.
Omar, who was born in Somalia and entered the United States in 1995 at age 12 as a refugee before becoming a naturalized citizen in 2000, has long denied wrongdoing. In a post on X Monday, she wrote: “I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.” Her office described the search as an “outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies.”
President Donald Trump told reporters he had “nothing to do with” the search, adding that Omar is “a terrible person” but that the matter is “really up to the DOJ.” Border czar Tom Homan had previously referenced an ongoing criminal investigation involving the congresswoman without providing specifics. House Democratic leaders called the action “deeply disturbing” and raised concerns about timing and the use of federal power against political adversaries.
It is unclear whether the investigation is into Omar’s marriage to her alleged brother for citizenship purposes, her father’s statements on her original immigration paperwork, or both.
The search occurred roughly three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, in which Omar is seeking reelection. Former federal prosecutors noted that investigative steps of this nature against a sitting member of Congress are uncommon so close to an election, and that the FBI has more typically led such probes rather than HSI. Details of the multi-year investigation, which sources said involves whistleblowers and potential false statements or immigration document issues, remain limited as the probe continues. No charges have been announced.
Omar has been a frequent critic of the Trump administration’s immigration policies and a target of the president’s public comments for years. The Justice Department’s Public Integrity section was reportedly consulted, and senior DOJ leadership approved the warrant, according to sources.
The investigation remains active, and neither the White House nor DHS provided additional public comment beyond referring questions to the Justice Department.
