Hillary Clinton says a Democratic Congress will investigate President Trump, his administration, his family and his “supporters and allies,” warning, “Buckle up. The election is just the beginning.”
Clinton made the remarks in a conversation with journalist Kara Swisher, in a clip RealClearPolitics posted Wednesday, less than a week before the Nov. 3 midterms.
“And he’s soon going to have a Democratic Congress trying to rein him in, hold him accountable, investigate him, his administration, his family, his, you know, supporters and allies,” Clinton said.
“He literally has held Republicans hostage for a decade and that only works for so long. One day, the hostages look around and say there are more of us than there is of him,” she said.
“We need to take him on, and I think we can see that happen. So buckle up,” she added.
Conservatives pounced. Townhall writer Amy Curtis said the comments show Democrats plan to “spend the next two years and beyond persecuting their political opponents while telling us Republicans are the fascist ones.”
Clinton’s comments came the same week former Vice President Kamala Harris urged Democrats not to impeach Trump a third time if they win the House, The Hill reported.
“I think that going in the direction of impeachment is not a good idea, just to be honest with you, just because we have limited resources,” Harris told MeidasTouch’s Aaron Parnas in a Tuesday interview, according to the New York Post.
“I think the energy and the resources need to be put into accountability, need to be put into investigations. And that’s where the time should be spent,” she said.
“Remember, I was in the Senate for the last go-round, and the votes aren’t there,” Harris added. Removing a president requires a two-thirds Senate vote, a supermajority neither party has held since the mid-1960s.
Harris said Democrats’ approach after the election “has to be kind of ruthless.” She explained, “They’re ruthless, but they’re cruel. And when I say we should be ruthless, I don’t mean cruel, but we should be uncompromising.”
Clinton has also said she opposes impeaching Trump. “I am against impeaching Donald Trump because I think it’s a sideshow and he can’t get convicted,” she told Swisher last week.
“But I am in favor of opening impeachment investigations into some of the elected officials or the appointed officials,” Clinton said, singling out War Secretary Pete Hegseth, whom she accused of “politicizing our military.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has said Democrats haven’t “ruled anything in, and we haven’t ruled anything out” on impeaching Trump, while signaling that officials such as Hegseth are likely targets.
Trump survived two impeachments in his first term. Harris, then a senator, voted to convict him in the first trial and was vice president during the second.
