Democrat Annie Andrews has pulled off one of the biggest upsets of election night. Networks project she will defeat Republican Sen. Darline Graham in deep-red South Carolina.
Fox News Decision Desk projects that Andrews, a pediatrician, will win the seat. NBC News called the race at about 9:59 p.m. ET, and Decision Desk HQ made the same projection. The Associated Press had not declared a winner as of this writing.
Andrews led Graham 50.99% to 46.87% with about 87% of the expected vote counted at 10:18 p.m. ET, according to Fox News.
If the projections hold, Andrews would be the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate race in South Carolina since 1998.
Graham is the younger sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, who died in July. She was appointed to the seat, then had to get through a bruising Republican runoff against Rep. Ralph Norman, which she won 52.4% to 47.6%, the Washington Examiner reported.
Norman did not hold back on Tuesday night. “SC was not going to be FORCED to vote for a PROPPED UP CANDIDATE!!” he posted.
Trump went all in for Graham. He rallied for her at Clemson on Oct. 21 and attacked her opponent on Truth Social as “Annie ‘Trannie’ Andrews,” the Daily Caller reported.
Andrews had a big money advantage, raising $9.4 million in the third quarter compared with Graham’s $1.8 million. She made the appointment the center of her campaign, telling voters that “a Senate seat isn’t an inheritance.”
“Andrews” was among the top political searches on Google and a top trending topic on X Tuesday night as the result sank in.
