Job Openings Rise, But There’s More To The Story

The number of available jobs in the U.S. increased in September, partly due to state and local government gains, while layoffs remained relatively low.

Employers reported 7.523 million job openings in September, up 333,000 from a revised 7.190 million in August, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data released Tuesday. The job openings rate increased to 4.5% from 4.3% the previous month; however, a significant portion of the increase came from state and local government, rather than private-sector employers.

State and local government job openings increased by 108,000 in September, accounting for roughly one-third of the nationwide monthly increase, according to the BLS. Federal job openings were at a much lower level than they were during the Biden administration after President Donald Trump attempted to eliminate thousands of federal positions during the first several months of his second term.

The increase came alongside a modest improvement in hiring and a decline in layoffs, suggesting employers were maintaining demand for workers without substantially accelerating workforce expansion.

The number of hires increased by 131,000 to 5.402 million in September, while the hiring rate edged up to 3.4% from 3.3% in August, according to the BLS. The overall increase in job openings was concentrated in several industries, including government, construction and manufacturing.

Meanwhile, layoffs and discharges were little changed at approximately 1.6 million, with the layoffs rate holding at 1.0%.

The number of workers voluntarily leaving their jobs also increased, with quits rising to approximately 3.4 million in September from a revised 3.0 million in August. The quits rate increased to 2.1% from 1.9%, suggesting more workers were willing or able to leave their positions.

The September report follows a weaker-than-expected employment picture in the broader labor market. Employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, according to the Labor Department’s separate September employment report.

The data arrives as Americans continue to grapple with elevated living costs and concerns about economic conditions.
