Reading the news this morning, it’s apparent that many politicos have decided that Trump liking Cruz is the same as Donald having named the Senator as his running mate.
According to The Hill:
Donald Trump on Tuesday named Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) when asked about his possible running mate in 2016.
The article cites a story on Lifezette that discusses an interview Trump took part in on Tuesday night.
In the interview with Laura Ingraham, Trump was asked if he would pick Cruz.
“Well, I like like him,” Trump said Tuesday. “He’s backed everything I’ve said … Ted Cruz is now agreeing with me 100 percent.”
That’s as close to naming a pick as Trump got. When pressed further, he said that “I like to think of victory, I’ve had a lot of victories, and I like to do victories first, then start thinking about other things.”
The pair would make a fascinating ticket that would be difficult for Clinton to overcome, but Trump’s comments don’t equate to having made a decision.
Trump’s major weakness is that he has no political operation to speak of. His get out the vote organization is t-shirts, hats and a slogan. Cruz brings an extremely efficient, heavily-deployed ground operation to the campaign.
While the other candidates have been burning through cash, Cruz has put together political operations in every county for each of the first four primary states on a shoestring budget.
Similar stances on immigration and the role of government in business bodes well for a Trump/Cruz ticket.
Cruz has avoided criticizing Trump and even met privately with Donald over the summer. The possibility exists, they seem to like each other, but neither has actually said they’ll be riding in the same helicopter any time soon.
