Trump starts NAFTA renegotiation

The Trump administration notified Congress Thursday that it will renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) starting the process to fix the trade imbalances harming American workers.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross sent a letter to Congress informing lawmakers that negotiations would soon begin.

“With this letter, we intend to notify not just Congress, but all our trading partners, that free and fair trade is the new standard for U.S. trade deals,” he said. “Since the signing of NAFTA, we have seen our manufacturing industry decimated, factories shuttered, and countless workers left jobless. President Trump is going to change that.”

The notification starts a 90-day period during which negotiations between the administration and Congress will shape the goals and boundaries for talks with NAFTA partners.

Getting rid of NAFTA was a Trump campaign promise. But after trading partners requested to renegotiate instead, Trump agreed.
