Trump’s nominee for Secretary of the Army withdraws

President Donald Trump’s second pick to head up the Army withdrew his name from consideration Friday.

Senator Mark Green (R-TN) backed out as Democrats increasingly criticized him for his comments and actions.

Green’s opposition to same-sex marriage, declaring transgenderism is a disease and comments referring to the Muslim army attacking Constantinople as a “horde” are central to the Democrats complaints about him.

LGBT advocates also went after Green for his opposition to rules allowing transgender individuals to use public restrooms of their choosing.

“I am honored that President Trump nominated me for this position,” Green said in a statement. “I appreciate his support and confidence in me, as well as that of Secretary Mattis and many others, and their desire to make America great again by preparing our military to face the many challenges in this world for the safety and security of our nation.

“But to meet these challenges, there should be no distractions. And unfortunately, due to false and misleading attacks against me, this nomination has become a distraction.”

Earlier this week Green had reaffirmed his intention to stick out the nomination process, but Democrat opposition in the Senate made his confirmation look less likely.

“Tragically, my life of public service and my Christian beliefs have been mischaracterized and attacked by a few on the other side of the aisle for political gain,” Green said.

The White House has not yet issued a statement on Green’s withdrawal.
