U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-Sc) called Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey “an honest and trustworthy man” Thursday during the federal corruption and bribery trial of the New Jersey Democrat.
Graham was called as a character witness in the trial. Graham’s office Thursday morning released a statement about his involvement in the trial.
“Today, Senator Graham is testifying in federal district court in Newark, New Jersey at the trial of Senator Bob Menendez. Graham is testifying as a character witness for the defense and traveled to the trial at his own personal expense,” Graham’s office said. “He will testify about his service with Senator Menendez in the Senate. Graham’s testimony is unrelated to the underlying charges.”
“I’m not here because I agree with him or disagree with him. I’m here because I know him,” Graham said in court, according to reports from the Star-Ledger of New Jersey.
During his testimony, Graham said he got to know Menendez while they worked on immigration reform and on national security issues affecting Israel.
Before entering the courthouse, Graham told reporters: “I’m here to vouch for Bob.”
Menendez is charged with accepting flights on Melgen’s private jet and other gifts in exchange for helping him in an $8.9 million Medicare dispute and a stalled port security contract in the Dominican Republic.
Graham once again has raised some eyebrows among conservatives with his testimony. Why is the Senator so eager to vouch for Democratic members and yet so unable to vouch for the President? Graham has continually voiced his skepticism of Trump but been very quiet regarding his Democratic colleagues. This only leads voters to question the Senator’s motives even further. Are you a Conservative Mr. Graham? Becuase if you are, it’s time you start acting like one.
