Report: Many at Breitbart wonder if Bannon will ‘last the day’

Allies of former Trump Strategist Steve Bannon are distancing themselves from the controversial political figure according to a new report.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Breitbart News’ board of directors is considering releasing Bannon who serves as the board’s chairman. The reconsideration of Bannon’s role at the political website comes after his attacks on the president, his family and others in the administration were made public Tuesday.

Mr. Bannon’s longtime benefactors, billionaires Robert Mercer and his daughter Rebekah Mercer, are actively distancing from him even before the expected release of Michael Wolff’s book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” according to two people close to the Mercers.

They and other Breitbart News Network LLC board members on Thursday were debating whether to oust Mr. Bannon as chairman, with many supportive of the move, according to a person familiar with the exchanges. Among the considerations are Breitbart’s contractual relationships with other entities, including Sirius XM radio, that involve Mr. Bannon.

Staffers at Breitbart, which Mr. Bannon has called his “killing machine,” described a “chaotic” day at the company, with writers—many personally recruited by Mr. Bannon—wondering whether he would last the day.

The Mercers, billionaire supporters of Bannon, pulled their support for any of his political efforts and as the Journal reported, it looks like they plan to get as far away from him as possible fearing his negative effects on the Trump agenda.

“I support President Trump and the platform upon which he was elected,” Rebekah Mercer said in a statement, according to the Washington Post. “My family and I have not communicated with Steve Bannon in many months and have provided no financial support to his political agenda, nor do we support his recent actions and statements.”

After being fired from the White House, Bannon experienced nothing but failure with his campaign to elect Roy Moore resulting in the loss of a safe Republican Senate seat to a weak Democrat.

The White House has been clear that the attacks on the president were untrue and very unappreciated. President Trump on Wednesday unloaded on Bannon in a 4-paragraph smackdown and White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in Thursday’s press briefing that Breitbart’s board firing him is “something they should consider.”
