‘Nails And Shrapnel’: Package Bomb Explodes In Texas FedEx Facility

by Thomas Phippen

Another package bomb exploded in Texas early Tuesday morning, this time at a FedEx shipping hub near San Antonio, injuring at least one person.

Federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI responded after the detonation, responded to the scene along with local police and emergency crews, Click 2 Houston reports.

The San Antonio Fire Department said there were around 75 people working at the facility when the package, filled with nails and shrapnel, exploded. One person “complained of injury described as a non life threatening percussion type injury,” the fire department said in a tweet.

The package may have been en route to Austin, where residents have been terrorized by four package bomb incidents in the last three weeks. Police are still investigating the second most recent attack that occurred Sunday evening, injuring two young men.

Interim Austin police chief Brian Manley said the Sunday attack showed an escalating threat and “a higher level of sophistication, a higher level of skill in the method and scope of the attacks.”

The first three bombs were hidden in packages and left on doorsteps of homes, but the Sunday bomb was rigged to a for sale sign in a residential neighborhood. Two young men walking by may have tripped a wire mechanism, setting off the blast.

“What we have seen now is a significant change from what appeared to be three very-targeted attacks to what was, last night, an attack that would have hit a random victim that happened to walk by,” Manley said Monday. “So we’ve definitely seen a change in the method.”
