A man was firing a gun in the hotel lobby of the Trump National Doral Resort when local police responded and shot him.
The gunman draped an American flag over the lobby counter and begin firing a gun in the lobby of the resort at about 1:30 a.m. Friday morning. He was heard to be yelling something about President Donald Trump.
Doral police, with Miami-Dade officers as backup, responded to 911 calls from employees and immediately shot the gunman multiple times. The suspect was seen sitting up a gurney while being attended to by medical personnel, but his condition and identity have not been released.
“These officers did not hesitate for one second to engage this individual who was actively shooting in the lobby of the hotel,” Miami-Dade police Director Juan Perez said.
Authorities are not currently treating the event as a terrorist act, but they may as the investigation continues.
Perez also said that a fire alarm had been pulled and that the suspect may have actually wanted the police presence.
“This was a definite attempt to lure officer into the lobby of that hotel,” Perez said.
One officer was hurt while responding and is being treated for a broken bone. His injury was not from a gunshot.
The FBI, Secret Service and Florida Department of Law Enforcement will all have roles in the investigation.
