President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Leader Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Steve Scalise and DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen appeared Friday during a surprise event in the Rose Garden of the White House on border security and the government shutdown.
The president first highlighted the very good job and wage numbers released by the Department of Labor Friday then recapped a meeting that he had with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on border security.
“We had a productive meeting today with Speaker Pelosi and Senator Schumer,” Trump said. “We’re all on the same path in terms of wanting to get the government open.”
Trump asked Vice President Pence, Jared Kushner and Sec. Nielsen to head a group that will meet with Democrats over the weekend to “determine what we are going to do about the border.”
Pence said, the meeting with Democrats was “constructive.” He said he is “hopeful” that meaningful progress will be made as talks continue.
“I think there are places where we can find common ground,” Republican House leader McCarthy said. “There was progress today.”
