The Al-Asad and Erbil (Irbil) Airbases in Iraq were attacked this evening as multiple surface-to-surface missiles were fired at the facilities by Iran and an unconfirmed report says that there are multiple Iraqi military casualties.
The Pentagon issued a statement saying that at about 5:30 p.m. EST, Iran launched more a dozen ballistic missiles against at least two facilities in the region.
Initial reports say that there are no American casualties from the attack.
While an Iraqi security source told CNN that some Iraqi military members had become casualties at Al-Asad, that report has not been confirmed and the Pentagon has said only that they are currently doing initial battle damage assessment at the facilities.
The White House said only that they are aware of the attacks and President Trump is monitoring the situation.
Al-Asad houses U.S., Iraqi and other coalition troops and is located in Iraq’s western province of Al Anbar and Erbil is in the northern Kurdistan region.
Iranian state media, Fars News Agency, said that Iran claims responsibility and that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had launched “tens of” missiles. And now, the agency has made public videos of the launches.
The attack comes just five days after the U.S. military killed Iran’s top general Qasem Soleimani and is a change in tactics by Iran who, up to this point, had opted to use proxy forces to attack U.S. and allied interests.
This is a developing story and will be updated as events warrant.
