Iran Reports An ‘Incident’ At Its Largest Nuclear Facility

A fire at the largest uranium enrichment facility in Iran broke out Thursday, according to a the country’s nuclear agency, the Associated Press reported.

The reported fire was referred to as an “incident” at a shed in a construction zone that happened in Nantaz, Iran, early Thursday, according to the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), the AP reported.

An image of a brick building with a damaged roof and charred walls was released by the AEOI, though it was unclear if the structure photographed was the shed mentioned, according to the AP.

“There are physical and financial damages and we are investigating to assess,” a spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Behrouz Kamalvandi, said on Iranian state television, AP reported. “Furthermore, there has been no interruption in the work of the enrichment site. Thank God, the site is continuing its work as before.”

The photograph showed a door that appeared to be blasted from its hinges accompanied by scattered debris, AP reported.

Nantaz Gov. Ramazanali Ferdowsi said a “fire” occurred at the facility, while the AEOI did not explicitly say that a fire damaged the structure, the AP reported.

The facility’s centrifuge operations were unaffected and radiation was contained officials said, AP reported. Since sabotage campaigns have previously focused on the facility, Iranian Nuclear Chief Ali Akbar Salehi and Kamalvandi hurried to Natanz.
