Tesla Tequila sold out hours after hitting the market on Thursday at $250 per bottle, Business Insider reported.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk teased the idea of launching “Teslaquila” in a tweet on April Fools Day in 2018, Reuters reported.
Several of the billionaire’s followers believed he was joking about the idea when he tweeted about it on April Fools Day in 2018, Reuters reported. Musk tweeted “Teslaquila launching soon” with a “visual approximation” in October 2018, according to the second Reuters report.
The company’s tequila can only be shipped to certain states “due to industry regulations,” according to the company website.

The tequila, which hit the market on Thursday, comes in a lightning-bolt shaped bottle, Business Insider reported, and is “aged in French oak barrels, featuring a dry fruit and light vanilla nose with a balanced cinnamon pepper finish,” according to Tesla’s website.
Mexico’s Tequila Regulatory Council disapproved of Musk’s product in 2018, reasoning the “name ‘Teslaquila’ evokes the word Tequila … (and) Tequila is a protected word,” Reuters reported. The council enforces the rule that to be considered tequila, a drink must be made in certain region of Mexico, according to Reuters.
Tesla submitted applications to market “Teslaquila” for being a “distilled agave liquor” and “distilled blue agave liquor,” according to the the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website, Reuters reported. Tesla submitted applications in Mexico, Jamaica and the European Union.
Tesla did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
